  IELTS Test Information

IELTS measures the language ability of an individual who wants to study or work in a country where English is used as a language of communication.

There are two types of the IELTS test:

It has two test versions: Academic- for people who want to apply for higher education or professional registration, and General Training- for those who want to gain work experience, or for immigration purpose.

  IELTS Test Eligibility

The eligibility for IELTS Test is :

  • IELTS is eligible for students who are applying to study in UK, Australia, Canada, US and New Zealand.
  • The minimum academic qualification is 10+2.
  • Candidates who are willing to study in an English-speaking country can opt for this test.

  IELTS Test Syllabus

IELTS test assesses the ability of candidates in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English within a span of three hours.
It has two versions of the test: IELTS Academic and IELTS General training. Listening and speaking are the same for both the test, while reading and writing varies depending on version of the test candidate takes.


This will assesses your use of spoken English where every test is recorded.
  • Part 1 - the examiner will test you on your general questions about yourself and similiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests which lasts for 4-5minutes.
  • Part 2 - you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a topic mentioned in it.Time limit is one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions based on the topic given.
  • Part 3 - further questions will be asked about the topic in Part 2 which will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This last for 4-5mins.


Candidates have to write answers to a series of questions based on four recordings of native English speakers given below.
  • Recording 1 – this is a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2 – there will be a monologue set in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 3 – this is a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context.
  • Recording 4 – there will be a monologue on an academic subject.


This measures the readings skills of candidates which includes reading for gist, reading for main ideas, skimming, recognising writer’s opinion, attitudes and purpose.

IELTS Academic test - this includes three long texts range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical which are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. Candidates have been selected for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people applying for higher education or professional registration.

IELTS General Training test - this includes extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines where candidates are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.


Topics are of general interest. There are two tasks:
  • Task 1 - you will be asked to describe, summarise, compare or explain the information in your own words based on an informative image (graph, table, chart) or process image (tech process, manufacturing process, natural process) which will be presented to you. And also to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event.
  • Task 2 - you will be asked to write an essay on a given topic, argument or problem which must be in a formal style.

Topics are of general interest. There are two tasks:
  • Task 1 - you will be asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the given situation. The letter may be in the form personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
  • Task 2 - you will be asked to write an essay on a given topic, argument or problem. The essay can be in the form of personal style.

The test pattern for IELTS is divided into four section/modules in the Academic IELTS. Time limit for the test is 2hr 45min (Depending upon test centre00 speaking test sometimes, it take place up to 7 days before or after the test date)

  IELTS Test - Calculating the overall band score

A score is given for each test component – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall band score. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

  IELTS Test - Results validity period

While it is up to each organisation to set a validity period that works for their purposes, the IELTS partners recommend a 2-year validity period for IELTS test results based upon the well-documented phenomenon of second language loss or 'attrition'.
